US man who got first pig heart transplant dies after 2 months
Lauren Neergaard Carla K Johnson 05:10, Mar 10 2022 The first person to receive a heart transplant from a pig has died, two months after the groundbreaking experiment, the Maryland hospital that performed the surgery announced Wednesday.
David Bennett, 57, died on Tuesday at the University of Maryland Medical Centre. Doctors didn’t give an exact cause of death, saying only that his condition had begun deteriorating several days earlier. Bennett's son praised the hospital for offering the last-ditch experiment, saying the family hoped it would help further efforts to end the organ shortage.
“We are grateful for every innovative moment, every crazy dream, every sleepless night that went into this historic effort,” David Bennett Jr. said in a statement released by the University of Maryland School of Medicine. From 182kg and struggling to put his socks on to running an ultra marathon
Eugene Bingham 05:00, Mar 10 2022 Charles Amoamo vividly remembers the moment he realised, once and for all, that things needed to change. At that stage of his life, he spent a lot of time lying in bed, watching Netflix, eating bad food.
“You just build this prison, you get stuck – you’re not living at all,” he says. And then his sister, Hinemoa, had a word with him. Amoamo was 182kg at the time. No one will understand what it’s like in the morning to put socks on at 182kg unless you’ve been big – it was like an Olympic event.”
There were other reasons it was hard for him to move: an industrial accident in Australia years earlier had made it a struggle for him to even walk steadily. A 1.5 tonne steel beam fell on his right foot at work one day, and he had four toes amputated. . Click here stuff news

Niue reports its first-ever case of Covid-19, a traveller from New Zealand
Anna Loren 20:06, Mar 09 2022 Niue, one of the only countries to remain Covid-free throughout the pandemic, has recorded its first case of the virus. The person, a traveller from New Zealand, arrived on a flight on Monday.
The person was double vaccinated and boosted and had returned a negative PCR test and rapid antigen tests prior to boarding their flight, a statement from the office of premier Dalton Tagelagi said. On the flight were 26 other passengers, who also tested negative prior to departure.
Niue, which has a population of just under 2000, vaccinated 97 per cent of its eligible population in 2021. Our extremely high vaccination rate is another factor in our favour, as it slows the spread of transmission and reduces the health impacts in those who do contract this virus,” the statement said. Government departments advised to 'pause' dismissal of unvaccinated workers
Daniel Smith 19:43, Mar 09 2022 Government departments and agencies have been advised to “pause” the dismissal of staff who are refusing to get vaccinated. The advice from the Public Service Commission, comes after the High Court ruled vaccine mandates for Police and Defence Force workers was unlawful.
The commission said while the court ruling applied only to Police and the Defence Force, it was a “timely reminder that health and safety risk assessments should be reviewed on a regular basis to maintain their currency and test the assessments against emerging or new advice”.
A number of agencies were in the process of dismissing unvaccinated staff under the current vaccine policy, but dismissals should only occur under certain circumstances, the commission said. Every decision to dismiss an employee is based on the information employers have at the time. . Click here stuff-news

Government plan to tackle Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder 'has failed'
Paula Penfold and Louisa Cleave 05:00, Mar 10 2022 A major government initiative to tackle Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has failed to deliver “any meaningful difference” to people with the disorder, say experts who work in the field, and the Health Minister has admitted “there is still a long way to go”.
The three-year action plan was brought in by the then-government in 2016, with Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne saying it was “aimed at better supporting those affected by FASD, and reducing the numbers of babies born with this preventable condition”.
FASD is permanent brain damage caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. The action plan was supposed to be reviewed upon its completion in 2019, but that review never happened. But six years on from the launch, those who work in the field say those objectives had not been achieved. Click here stuff-news

Mother shown dead on the street alongside her children in horror Ukraine photo was a Silicon Valley worker
Josh Marcus 10/03/2022...Over the weekend, images of a family of Ukrainian civilians killed by Russian shelling outside of Kyiv inspired worldwide outrage, including from Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky, who vowed to find and punish “every b*****d” responsible.
They were just trying to get out of town. To escape. The whole family,” Mr Zelensky said in a video address. “How many such families have died in Ukraine?” The family in the photo, which ran with top billing in places like The New York Times, has now been identified and linked to a tech company partially based in the US.
Tatiana Perebeinis, 43, along with her children Alise, 9, and son Nikita, 18, were all killed shortly after they crossed a partially destroyed bridge over the Irpin River and were hit by a Russian mortar. ACC staffer breached client privacy after snooping in sensitive claim - review authority
Anusha Bradley 10/03/2022..ACC has apologised to an abuse survivor after an employee breached her privacy by looking at her sensitive claim while investigating her husband for suspected fraud. RNZ reported the case of Matthew* who discovered 92 ACC staff had looked at his sensitive claim file, which relates to sexual abuse, 356 times since it had been closed.
His wife Kate* later discovered an ACC investigator had twice looked at her own sensitive claim file in October 2017 as part of his investigation into her husband. Matthew was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
ACC last year dismissed a complaint from Kate that the investigator had breached her privacy under the ACC Code of Claimants Rights, which states clients' privacy must be respected. But an independent review of ACC's decision has now found the agency's original decision was "not correct. Click here RNZ news

Senior firefighter quits association over its treatment of women
10/03/2022...A senior firefighter has left the only association for volunteers after its chief executive, who has faced sexual assault allegations from women, made a post celebrating International Women's Day yesterday.
The United Fire Brigades' Association (UFBA) chief executive Bill Butzbach has faced sexual assault allegations - including an inquiry that was dropped when the complainants disagreed with the terms of reference.
In the post Butzbach said he was "honoured" to work with women and welcomed the theme of the day which was to "break the bias". All staff, executives, and officers of the UFBA are proud to support a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace, free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination," the post states. Click here RNZ news

Ukraine welcomes 'powerful message' NZ sent passing Russia sanctions law
Jamie Ensor 10/03/2022...Parliament's "powerful message" of support for new sanctions legislation targeting those linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine has received a warm welcome globally, New Zealand's top foreign affairs official says.
All political parties represented in Parliament have backed new legislation enabling the Government to impose economic sanctions on people, companies and assets associated with Russia's aggression towards its eastern European neighbour.
The Russia Sanctions Bill moved quickly through all stages of the legislative process on Wednesday night, forgoing usually lengthy public consultation. All MPs supported the urgency in acknowledgement of the need to respond quickly to Vladimir Putin's war. Click here News-hub

Government adds another $250 million to help keep planes flying to NZ
Melanie Carroll 05:00, Mar 10 2022..The Government is providing a further $250 million in subsidies until March 2023 to keep air cargo links open, despite the easing of Covid border restrictions this year.
New Zealand’s closed borders as a result of Covid-19, and record low passenger numbers, resulted in air cargo capacity dropping, and sent the cost of freight skyrocketing. The top-up will kick in on April 1. The Government put an extra $195m in the Maintaining International Air Connectivity (MIAC) scheme for flights between the start of November 2021, on top of $170m in support from May to October last year.
In total, the Government has spent more than $700m so far on aviation support, including an initial $372m in 2020. As New Zealand reconnects with the world, we expect to see a significant increase in traveller numbers over the next year. . Click here Stuff-news

As the First Lady of Aotearoa Hip-Hop, Teremoana Rapley brings her whole self to the table
Grant Smithies 06:00, Mar 06 2022 Sitting at home in Auckland’s Morningside, the First Lady of Aotearoa Hip-Hop is doing what she does best: telling stories. And I don’t mean just a few scrawny anecdotes to pass the time. The stories Teremoana Rapley tells have meat on their bones.
The beating heart of most of these stories is either pain or joy, sometimes both. The pain came early, with a tough childhood in Upper Hutt after her pregnant mum emigrated there from Rarotonga.
The joy? That was more of a slow build after leaving home at age 14 to join hip-hop crew Upper Hutt Posse in 1987, just before they released this country’s first rap record. Rapley moved on to other pioneering bands - Moana and The Moahunters and Dam Native. Her story took her to the United States, Jamaica, Australia, Hawaii. She performed on stage alongside New Orleans funk royalty The Neville Brothers and New York rap heroes Public Enemy. Click here stuff-news

US snowboard champ 'Monster Mike' finds pride in prosthetic design
AFP 10/03/2022..For American snowboarder Mike Schultz, personal Paralympic success comes second to his work building high-impact prosthetics to help other amputees pursue the extreme sports they love.
At this week's Beijing Winter Paralympics the man known as 'Monster Mike' won silver in the snowboarding cross category for athletes with significant impairment in one or two legs. He won gold in the same event four years ago at the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea, but this time was pipped at the post by Canadian sky diving daredevil Tyler Turner.
On Friday he has another chance for a podium finish in the banked slalom event, which has been brought forward a day because of the threat of melting snow at the Zhangjiakou venue. But Schultz said Paralympic glory isn't the most important thing in his life. Click here AFP

Book of the Week: A classic of Indian home cooking
Rijula Das 10/03/2022..Indian home cooking is the fine art of eyeballing and relying on instincts. Most people learn cooking by watching other people do it, and eyeballing is the preferred unit of measurement. I find in myself an inexplicable, almost pathological inability to follow a recipe.
I would much rather make up my own spice-mixes, and eyeball measurements and judge from the colour of the food what needs more time in the fire. There’s a certain freedom and joy in making it up as I go along but it’s a trait that makes for a bad baker.
But I love cookbooks. Their delights are manifold. They look beautiful, they are full of infinite possibilities, they make life seem full, joyful and luscious. There are two kinds of Indian cookbooks –– ones that repackage a pan-Indian sort of cuisine for cleaner. Click here Newsroom

$6.6 million lost to cyber crime in the December quarter
Daniel Smith 05:00, Mar 10 2022 A record $6.6 million was lost to online financial crime the December quarter, the largest amount lost to digital fraud in a quarter since records began, Cert NZ says in its latest quarterly report.
There was a 28 per cent increase in phishing and credential harvesting, in which a fake email or text message was used to take a victims personal information. New types of scams were on the rise, with reports of the Flubot text scam, which encouraged victims to pay for a non-existent courier package, with 1707 instances reported.
But Cert NZ chief executive, Rob Pope said a rise in reported scams was not entirely a bad thing. On the one hand, more reports means that more incidents are occurring, but it also means New Zealanders are aware of the steps to take when they encounter cybercrime,” Pope said. Offshore turbines and lake-top solar panels: Waikato's big power play
Stephen Ward 05:00, Mar 10 2022 An international group is looking at installing large-scale wind farms off Waikato’s west coast and also solar energy panels above the surface of north Waikato lakes.
That’s the word from Waikato Regional Council’s principal strategic advisor Blair Dickie, who says Waikato is being viewed very favourably for such investments due to its wind and sunshine assets, and accessibility to good power distribution networks.
“It’s pretty much a Goldilocks region,” Dickie told Stuff. There’s certainly a lot of good that comes together in the Waikato. A report by Dickie to Thursday’s climate action committee hui notes there are already three big solar energy projects being proposed for Waikato and two new wind farm projects being progressed. click here stuff-news

How Commanders trade with Colts impacts Fantasy outlook for Terry McLaurin, more
Jamey Eisenberg 10/03/2022..Washington has a new team name and now a new quarterback this season. On Wednesday, the Commanders traded with the Colts to acquire Carson Wentz. Indianapolis will get two third-round picks from Washington in return, and the teams are set to swap second-round picks in this year's NFL Draft as part of the deal.
The Commanders tried to acquire Russell Wilson from Seattle, but Wilson was instead traded to Denver on Tuesday. Washington coach Ron Rivera made it clear at the NFL Combine that he wanted an upgrade at quarterback, and he apparently left Indianapolis feeling good about Wentz.
If we had an opportunity to get a veteran guy, we'd feel really good about that veteran stepping in," Rivera said last week. We'll find out if Wentz is better than Taylor Heinicke, who took over for an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) in Week 1 and went 7-8 as a starter. Click here CBS

Miriama Smith returns to Shortland Street, 24 years later
Kerry Harvey 05:00, Mar 10 2022 In 1998, actor Miriama Smith left Shortland Street because she didn’t enjoy the public recognition that came with being beamed into New Zealand living rooms five days a week.
Twenty four years later, she’s back and enjoying every moment of her role as Detective Ngaire Hetariki, the woman who has quickly become the nemesis of crooked cop Hamish (Simon Arblaster). It seems Smith’s unhappiness during that first stint – as Nurse Awhina Broughton – was more about her personal circumstances than the demands of the show.
You get some actors that come out of drama school and they know that’s what they want to do. I wasn’t one of those,” Smith says. I wanted to do so many other things and so, for me, it was a great experience, a great learning ground. But I think I really needed to go away and keep finding out who I was. click here stuff news

A viral micro-miniskirt, and the glaring problem with 2000s fashion nostalgia.
Tamara Davis 10/03/2022..'I was horrified': Princess Diana's wedding dress designer shocked by gown.Banking sector bounces back as Covid-19 impact falls short of predictions. I knew it the moment it came down the runway.
It was a skirt, presented as part of the spring-summer 2022 collection for Italian label Miu Miu. As the "little sister" brand to fashion heavyweight Prada, Miu Miu attracts It-girls like moths to a flame.
The skirt - shorter than short; butt-cheek-grazing really - made several appearances, styled with cropped sweaters, brogues and socks, and other high fashion schoolgirl-inspired looks. It signalled the return of the micro-mini, the kind we haven't seen since Supré and Christina Aguilera in the early 2000s. But on a catwalk in 2021, the silhouette looked new. Newsworthy. The food packaging that annoys Kiwis the most
Molly Swift 10/03/2022...Shrink-wrap plastic, difficult to open or just unnecessary - Consumer NZ has revealed what food packaging annoys Kiwis the most. The report named the top five worst packaging offenders and taking out the top spot is an unexpected Kiwi favourite.
Watties 3-pack mini cans of baked beans packaging have irritated consumers the most, with some claiming to boycott the brand. Despite it being better value than buying three single cans, customers have been left wondering why they are paying less for a bit of plastic.
You pay less to get them shrink-wrapped, but you pay more to buy them individually," Consumer NZ head of content Caitlin Cherry told the AM show. "People are like can't a just buy three for the same price - no you can't. The cans are covered in shrink-wrap, which is soft plastic and harder to recycle. Click here News-hub

Unreleased Ed Sheeran song accidentally played during copyright hearing
Tom Pilgrim 09/03/2022...Sheeran and two of his Shape Of You co-authors, Steven McCutcheon and John McDaid, are involved in a legal dispute with two songwriters, Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue, who allege the song rips off parts of their 2015 track Oh Why – something that is denied.
The writers decided on including a vocal chant section using the minor pentatonic scale after the song’s chorus. Sheeran decided singing the section using the word “heya” was too “close to the bone” because it sounded similar to a song called No Diggity by the band Blackstreet.
But Sheeran’s lawyers have told the High Court that the singer and his co-writers have no recollection of having heard Oh Why before the legal fight and deny the allegations of copying. In July 2018, Mr Chokri and Mr O’Donoghue issued their own claim for ..Click here Independent news
